Dance Showcase tribute to Kalaupapa

April 1, 2016 - Hundreds of dance students from both the Upper and Lower Schools, along with the Hokuloa Singers and Orchestra 4, performed in the Spring Dance Showcase on Friday night at the Neal Blaisdell Concert Hall.

The special show, which entitled "E Mau Ana 'o Kalaupapa -- Close to Our Hearts," was a tribute to Kalaupapa.

"This was a deeply collaborative creative process, involving a small army of faculty and nearly 400 hundred students," said Director of Performing Arts Kevin Pease. "After a team of 'Iolani faculty, administrators and alums returned from three days in Kalaupapa, members of the history department embarked on a semester-long project with eighth graders whose writing and research informed the work of our dance faculty and inspired the performances.

"There is no way to capture the mana of Kalaupapa in a single evening's performance. What we presented was not a definitive history, but rather a collection of memories, of feelings, of blessings. Creating this performance has been a privilege, but our work to understand this sacred place does not end. The story of Kalaupapa is still being written and we recognize our kuleana as storytellers, artists and teachers to share what we have come to understand: e ho'ohanohano a e ho'omau, to honor and perpetuate."
