2016 Hawai‘i Summer Jazz Institute

June 9, 2016 - ‘Iolani School will host the 2016 Hawai‘i Summer Jazz Institute from June 9-17, offering music students and teachers an opportunity to tune into the latest jazz techniques and performances.

In partnership with the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel and the 'Iolani School Tam & Young Visual and Performing Arts Chair, the music series will connect participants to prominent educators and artists from the US Mainland and Germany and is free to attend.

"At 'Iolani, we see music as a powerful learning tool that brings people together, shares cultures and provides rich educational opportunities," said Curtis Abe, 'Iolani stage band director. "Our goal with events like the Hawai'i Summer Jazz Institute is to encourage our students to pursue their passions and to see the value in developing global relationships."

A final gala concert will be held on Thursday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. in 'Iolani's Seto Hall, featuring performances by the Summer Institute Bands, the UTA Jazz Orchestra and the International Jazz Collective Big Band with jazz ukulele virtuoso Benny Chong. The concert is free to attend and open to the public.

The International Jazz Collective Big Band, also the Hawai'i Summer Jazz Institute faculty, is made up of an international group of world-class performers and educators. Led by saxophonist Tim Ishii, director of jazz at UTA, the group brings quality performances and workshops to young musicians throughout Europe and the United States. The collective includes musicians such as Maynard Ferguson Big Bop Nouveau alumni Ken Edwards and Brian Mulholland, renowned teacher and trumpeter Uli Schulz, jazz pianist Dan Cavanagh, UTA professor of music Mike Drake and the Eddie Gomez Trio's Stefan Karlsson.
