The performing and visual arts flourish at ‘Iolani School. Creativity in a variety of artistic mediums, expert instruction in stagecraft, and a wealth of opportunity for self-expression are available to all ‘Iolani students.

The Performing Arts program includes chorus, band, orchestra, dance, theater, hula halau and more. Strings, percussion and voices resonate through the halls of the Castle Building's ground floor. Dancers plie with grace in ballet class, or ami ami with precision in hula halau. The ‘Iolani Dramatic Players earnestly rehearse their parts for the fall play or spring musical.

Equally vibrant, our engaging Visual Arts program exemplifies our belief that everyone has a unique way of seeing, thinking and feeling. Colors and abstract patterns leap from the walls of classrooms in the Art Building. Courses offer drawing, painting, watercolor, sculpture in wood and metal, ceramics, photography, design and more.

‘Iolani visual and performing artists have been recognized locally and nationally, from the Scholastic Art Awards competition to their participation in community concerts, parades, shows and productions.

Student shows and performances take place throughout the school year.

"I had some great teachers at ‘Iolani. I wasn’t always the best student, but I remember being challenged and inspired. I also remember my fellow students being really smart and awesome. I was also fortunate to have the opportunity to teach at ‘Iolani for three years with Mr. Roberts. He taught me a lot about being an artist and a teacher. He trusted me and gave me the first opportunity to really be a teacher. Without Dave Roberts, I would not be where I am today."
